Sports park project in Xiqing reduces carbon emission

The Zhangjiawo sports park project in Xiqing district has adhered to the green and low-carbon development principle, applying various innovation technologies and reducing carbon emissions so as to contribute to the local green development.

The project has a total construction area of 200 mu, consisting of three theme parks, cultural and sports center and jujube orchard. China Construction Science and Industry Corporation Ltd. (CSCEC) has undertaken the construction of the cultural and sports center of the project. In the early stage of the project, CSCEC, together with the Green and Low-carbon Laboratory of Tsinghua University and Tianjin Urban Planning Institute, carried out carbon emission reduction planning for the four stages of design, construction, operation, and demolition.

In the early stage of design and construction, the project adopted prefabricated construction with reusable steel structure building materials. Compared with traditional concrete, the carbon emission intensity of steel structure has been reduced by about 30%. At the same time, prefabricated materials are used for wallboard, floor, roof and other structures of the building to improve resource utilization. In addition, the project has transferred a large number of fabricated building materials from on-site operations to the factory. After the factory processes and manufactures building components, they will be transported to the construction site for direct assembly and installation, improving efficiency and reducing the workload of energy conservation.

According to Chen Xiaoxu, design director of Zhangjiawo sports park project from CSCEC, there is basically no wet work on the site. The wallboards are assembled by robots on the construction site, saving the cost of personnel, materials and machines, reducing the consumption of water and electricity, and achieving carbon emission reduction in the construction process.

In the operation stage, the project will further realize carbon emission reduction through environmental monitoring system, personnel positioning system, intelligent lighting control system, photovoltaic integration technology, roof greening and other technical means. The carbon emission intensity can be controlled at 75kg carbon dioxide per square meter after the sports park is put into operation, reducing emission by about 15%.

"The carbon emission reduction in the design and construction phase of the project can reach 5,000 tons, and the annual carbon emission reduction in the project operation stage can reach 2,000 tons," said Chen.

With the support of innovative technology, CSCEC has effectively changed the construction mode of high material consumption, high pollution and extensive construction, and reduced the carbon emission. At present, the main structure of the sports park has been capped, and when it is completed, it will be the largest indoor community sports park in Xiqing district and even in Tianjin. It will also become a pioneer project for the green development in the construction industry.
