Mi Zong Yi is a form of martial arts created by grandmaster Huo Yuanjia by developing the Mi Zong Quan technique descended from his ancestors, and learning from various schools of martial arts. Huo frightened those who insulted Chinese as Asian sick men in Tianjin and Shanghai with superb martial arts. Out of patriotism and concern for the people, Huo ended the family tradition by taking on a stranger, Liu Zhensheng, as his first apprentice in Tianjin. In 1910, Huo established the Chinwoo Athletic Association in Shanghai and accepted more than 70 apprentices, promoting "Mi Zong Yi" and teaching Mi Zong Quan. After Huo's death, Liu Zinherited his will and passed on the art of Mi Zong Quan to his students.
